How to fix Xbox stick drift
Your aim walks on its own, menus scroll by themselves, and it gets worse every week. Here's every Xbox drift fix that actually works — and the one that ends it for good.
Why Xbox controllers drift
Stick drift is when your controller registers movement you never made. Your character creeps forward, your crosshair slides, menus scroll on their own — all while the stick sits untouched. It's not a settings problem and it's not in your head: it's the stick module physically wearing out.
- Xbox One and Series X|S controllers use ALPS analog potentiometer stick modules — tiny wipers physically dragging across a resistive strip every time you move the stick.
- That contact wears the strip down. Once the material is scored, the module reports phantom movement even when the stick sits perfectly centered.
- No cleaning, reset, or deadzone setting repairs worn resistive material. That's why drift always comes back — and gets worse.

Power cycle & re-pair
Hold the Xbox button for 10 seconds to fully power down, remove the batteries (or unplug), wait 30 seconds, then reconnect. Clears calibration glitches that mimic drift.

Clean around the stick base
Power off, then use compressed air (and a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol) around the stick housing. Dust, skin oil, and debris are a real cause of early drift on Xbox sticks.

Update controller firmware
Open the Xbox Accessories app on your console or PC and check for a firmware update. Rarely fixes true drift, but rules out software before you go further.

Raise the in-game deadzone
Most games let you increase stick deadzone so small phantom inputs get ignored. It hides drift instead of fixing it — and you lose fine aim control as drift gets worse.
